Job Summary

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences welcomes applications for a CIRES/ NSIDC DAAC Project Manager. The Project Manager supports the NASA Snow and Ice Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and is a member of the NSIDC DAAC management team. As one of 12 DAACs within the NASA Earth Observing System Data Information System (EOSDIS), NSIDC DAAC tools and applications are closely integrated with NASA EOSDIS enterprise services and technologies. The Project Manager leads projects through the entire project lifecycle applying interdisciplinary teams to establish and evolve DAAC and EOSDIS tools and applications that support the NSIDC DAAC mission to preserve NASA Earth science data and make it discoverable, accessible, and usable.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), affiliated with CIRES, at the University of Colorado Boulder, is a key national hub for snow and ice research. Renowned for its credibility in providing cryospheric data and services, NSIDC holds a leading role in research and development in this specialized field. Operating as part of CIRES, NSIDC supports research on Earth's cryosphere, including snow, ice, glaciers, frozen ground, and climate interactions. The center manages and distributes scientific data, develops tools for data access, supports users, conducts scientific research, and educates the public. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Manage multiple projects from inception through delivery - projects are primarily software development projects or projects related to Earth science or geospatial data

  • Develop and lead project teams that demonstrate the skills and expertise of team members which may include software developers, web developers, system operators, user support staff, technical writers and scientists

  • Work with collaborators and subject matter experts to gather and organize project goals and requirements, using these to develop project plans in coordination with the project team

  • Work within the project budget when scoping and managing the project

  • Communicate project status, issues, risks and proposed adjustments through various communication channels to team members at multiple levels

  • Coordinate with other project managers and resource managers to align project schedules, manage dependencies and balance resources

  • Maintain awareness of technologies and applications used and developed in other parts of the organization in order to find opportunities for collaboration and reuse

  • Develop vision and roadmaps for assigned tools and applications, identifying projects to achieve these goals and provide ongoing sustainment for these tools and applications

  • CIRES offers a generous compensation and benefits package.

  • The annual hiring salary for this position ranges from $81,000 - $125,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.

What We Require

  • Bachelors degree, preferably in an Earth science or engineering field

  • At least three years of project management experience leading cross-functional teams completing software development projects or projects related to Earth science or geospatial data

  • Project management training

What You Will Need

  • Experience managing projects that develop or evolve applications that will be integrated into an operational system

  • Experience leading multi-member teams to successfully develop and implement project plans, demonstrating the unique expertise and viewpoints of the team members

  • Experience managing, leading and coordinating multiple projects at once

  • Ability to communicate, coordinate and collaborate across an organization and at multiple levels to achieve project goals

  • Experience using project planning and management tools such as JIRA, Trello, or similar

  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
