The Colorado Secretary of State’s office seeks applications from highly qualified candidates for the position of Communications Specialist.

While Candidates from out of state will be considered for this role, the candidate selected for the position must relocate and reside in Colorado on the first day of their new position. A reasonable timeframe for relocation will be established on an individual basis, while considering business needs, and determining a start date. The Department will not be responsible for any relocation expenses.

Description of Job

DIVISION:

The Administration Division of the Department of State provides operational support to the Department, including human resources, finance, legal and policy, eLearning, communications, legislation, and direct support to the Office of the Secretary of State. The Division works collaboratively to meet the needs of the Department staff and community stakeholders. Through the execution of each program, the Administration Division seeks to ensure alignment with key performance goals and uphold the mission, vision, and values of the Department.

WORK UNIT:

The Communications Unit engages with the public, media, advocates, stakeholders, and elected officials to provide information regarding department services and programs and to advocate on behalf of the Department and Secretary. The unit:

  • Manages the public-facing communications for the Colorado Department of State (CDOS).

  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to share Department successes with external audiences.

  • Develops and fosters effective relationships with government agencies, government partners, key policymakers, the business community, and stakeholders.

  • Proactively communicates with the media, constituents, and the general public.

  • Responds to inquiries from the general public and the media.

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

In this role, you will be a valued member of the Communications team. By collaborating to create and manage original digital content, you will serve a key role to the Department by drafting and maintaining digital strategies, communications, and taking on other important tasks.

The ideal candidate will be a critical and creative thinker who is able to work independently as well as on a team. To succeed in this role, it is important that you have outstanding written and verbal skills and are committed to advancing a diverse and inclusive perspective.

The position will:

  • be an integral member of the Department’s Communications division, supporting the Director and Assistant Director of Communications.

  • draft digital strategies and communications and assist in implementing those strategies.

  • draft Department communications including, but not limited to, newsletters, fact sheets, social media content, creative content for Department programming, content to support public awareness initiatives, and outreach plans.

  • manage the Department’s social channels.

  • maintain the Department’s digital branding and digital voice.

  • support the Department’s ability to effectively communicate with the media, constituents, and the general public.

  • report to the Communications Director and work closely with the Assistant Communications Director and executive team on a day-to-day basis.

  • have assignments that are diverse in nature and will require the ability to determine practical solutions in a fast-paced environment.

  • work independently, manage tight schedules, handle multiple short- and long-term tasks simultaneously, and will occasionally need to be available on nights and weekends.

  • require the understanding and prudence that they will be perceived by the media and public as a representative of the Department.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

The exceptional candidate will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following preferred qualifications:

  • Previous State Service related to the work assigned to the position.

  • Experience in development of social media content, external communications documents, and maintaining professional communications calendars.

  • Ability to utilize metrics to analyze communication effectiveness.

  • Experience working for an elected official or candidate for public office.
