Amazon Sr. Hardware Development Engineer in Sunnyvale, California

Amazon Lab126 is an inventive research and development company that designs and engineers high-profile devices like the Kindle family of products. Lab126 began in 2004 as a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. Since then, we have worked to produce best-selling e-readers and tablets, as well as new inventions like Fire TV and the category-defining Echo.

Key job responsibilities

• Conceive, design and develop innovative hardware architectures including mechanical fixtures and prototypes for new products.

• Serve as technical lead for system design, including the development of electro-mechanical hardware, sensors, actuators, 3D models/assemblies and system schematics.

• Develop innovative design approaches to mitigate operational risk and achieve the desired precision in overall system performance.

• Proactively identify and address evolving requirements to maintain system readiness and uptime.

• Work within a multi-disciplinary team that includes mechanical, electrical & software engineers, internal research teams and external vendors to develop cutting-edge technology.

• Drive product definition, development execution and testing. Identify and validate product risks and work with cross-functional teams to mitigate them.

• Specify test plans and participate in testing to verify compliance with requirements.

• Interface with engineering managers and product & program management to drive new product development from concept to commercialization. Provide up-to-date, accurate information to colleagues and management.

• Develop business case, application, and theory of operation for engineering systems and document for senior management.

• Engage with vendors and suppliers to evaluate and select technology applicable to program objectives.

• Be hands-on to bring online new product prototypes, conduct verification testing and performance validation.

• Mentor and coach new engineers and interns.

• Support cost reduction activities through design refinement and innovative systems architecture solutions.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics and/or robotics or equivalent.

  • Minimum 7 years of relevant industry work experience or equivalent supplemented by graduate level academic work.

  • Direct hands-on experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD) including structural and geometric considerations for the development of assemblies with moving components.

  • Fluency with industry standard 3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Siemens NX, CREO and/or CATIA).

  • Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures.

  • Demonstrated track record of putting together systems integrating novel Hardware and Software components.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, systems engineering or equivalent.

  • Experience with Electro-mechanical Systems, Thermal management, Robotics, Mechatronics

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in 3D CAD including complex assemblies and multiple subsystems with moving components

  • 5+ years of Product Design & HW-SW Systems Development experience demonstrated through a record of successfully shipping products and technologies involving complex electromechanical components.

  • Demonstrated history of working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production.

  • Track record of managing technical projects including the application of systems engineering approaches to mitigate project and program risk.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $128,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
